Not yet heard of Metal Clay? Here you find the best way to start your passion!

With Metal Clay you can give your creativity free rein, either alone at home or in a group with like-minded people.

What is Metal Clay?

Metal Clay is a clay like material. The clay is filled with millions of tiny particles of silver, an organic binder and water. When the binder burns off, the piece shrinks a bit and you're left with a solid silver piece.

It is similar to polymer clay in wet stage and can easily be formed, moulded, textured and cut. After drying, you have to sand your pieces to a really smooth finish, drill it and combine multiple pieces using Paste or clay in the syringe like a glue.

Metal clay is available with different metal particles: gold, silver, copper, bronze, brass, iron and steel. The clays differ in terms of preparation, consistency and firing method.

Silver clay for beginners: make your first piece of jewellery

If you don't have any experience with metal clay, we recommend that you start with precious metals such as gold or silver. Of course gold is very expensive, but silver is a good choice. It's by far the easiest clay to work with. You can make beautiful jewellery with silver clay. The main advantage of silver clay is that it's easy to fire. You just have to make sure your piece is completely dry before firing.

We have compiled all our knowledge to create this Metal Clay Starterkit for beginners. Our long experience as instructors for metal clay workshops has helped us creating this exclusive starter kit with an excellent selection of tools. The kit includes high-quality tools and even Art Clay Silver 999!

Roll out the clay

Use spacers and a heavy, high quality roller to roll out your clay.

Texturize the surface

If you want, you can add a design to your surface. Simply use a stamp or a piece of structured paper.

Cut out the shape

Use a needle tool to cut out the shape. You can use stencils to cut out the form or do it free hand.

Fire your piece

Once the piece is bone dry, you can fire it. Fine silver clay (included in the kit) can even be fired with a handheld torch. Or if you own a kiln, you can fire your piece in the kiln.

The magic silver moment

Brushing the surface brings out the beautiful lustre of the silver.

Your piece of jewellery, handmade by you!

Congratulations, you did it! The piece is made of fine silver 999/1000

FAQ

Yes! You can make all type of jewellery with silver clay: pendants, earrings, bracelets, cuffs etc. If you want to make rings or bracelets, we recommend using Sterling Silver clay, which is stronger as it contains some copper. Sterling Silver clay cannot be fired with a torch.

If you plan to make rings, always think about the shrinkage!

Yes. If you use Fine silver clay (999), the fired jewellery will be a solid piece of fine silver 999.

Unfortunately not. The clay must be fired, called sintered, at a minimum temperature of 650°C. No kitchen kiln can get as hot.

Yes. All Fine silver clays can be torch fired. We recommend limiting the size  to a 2-Euro-coin for easy firing.

It all depends on your personal preferences, of course: Would you like the piece to be larger or smaller, thinner or thicker? For a pendant the size of a 1 euro coin and a thickness of 1.0 mm, you need approx. 5g of clay. For earrings, you usually try to make them as light as possible, so expect to use about 3g of clay (but you will need two). Also remember that you always need a little more clay for rolling out and cutting.
